Some early reviews :-
'My Favourite City At Night In The Rain' is quite possibly one of the most important albums you will listen to this year. If you want an example of why music is so wonderful and moves people in so many ways then you cannot pick a better example than this utterly triumphant work of art, Mark Whiteside and the musicians of One Sided Horse please take a bow, I thank you from the bottom of my heart... As an artist, Mark has reached a new benchmark in his canon with ‘My Favourite City at Night in the Rain’. His previous work as One Sided Horse has often sounded beautiful, but markedly stark. With this new album, he has found his place. The addition of a rich wealth of established musicians who can complement his writing so wonderfully has paid dividends. Somewhere in a parallel universe, Mark Whiteside is a well-deserved household name. ‘My Favourite City at Night in the Rain’ is an album I’ll return to often. You will too. – Stuart Willoughby

The second album by artist One Sided Horse again featuring members of the band Embrace but this time with the added spice of musicians from Space, Carol Hodge, Gareth Cole and the bass player with the Animals - Norm Helm.
Starting an album with a piano intro that’s reminiscent of ‘The Winner Takes it All’ by Abba is a bold move. Thankfully, Mark Whiteside - aka One Sided Horse - has a voice that complements such an audacious trick perfectly. On his second album proper under the OSH banner, ‘My Favourite City at Night in the Rain’, the Preston troubadour returns with a set of languorous songs sung in his stately register, which are designed to be listened to as a whole, and one would presume preferably - as the title suggests - at night.
The album paints a sky of melancholy colours; working in bold strokes, Whiteside writes gorgeous - and often staggeringly emotive - songs about being together forever (‘Like Swans’) which sit comfortably alongside forays into sophisticated late night balladry featuring music that could have easily have been written for George Michael’s ‘Older’ album (‘The Overload of Missing’).
‘My Favourite City at Night in the Rain’ takes Whiteside’s trademark low-key sound and elevates it to dazzling new heights. ‘I Can’t Live Without Your Love’ is a genuinely stunning track, with waves of Mickey Dale-arranged strings that caress the listener.
Aided by several members (Dale, Steve Firth, and Mike Heaton) of West Yorkshire rock outfit Embrace (the album is also produced by Dale), this release consolidates ‘Side’s - Mark’s moniker in day-job band, the mighty Evil Blizzard - songcraft, placing him firmly in the mould of Bill Fay and late-period Leonard Cohen. As with his previous album, 2018’s stellar debut ‘Between Light & Space’, these are love songs that appeal to the Everyman.
The whole album glistens with an almost folk-like magic, as an artist, Mark has reached a new benchmark in his canon with ‘My Favourite City at Night in the Rain’.

The best music always has the power to move you, to immerse you in a beautiful story, a classic book or an Oscar winning film that is now being delivered as life changing and mood enhancing music. That's because it's not just music, it becomes almost part of you and affects you on a basic level, not just cerebrally but emotionally too.
Mark's next One Sided Horse release is the sublime 'My Favourite City At Night In The Rain' in October 2023 and I have had the utmost privilege of being able to listen to the album for the last few weeks. I think this could well be one of the best pieces of song writing of the last couple of decades...
